Dear North Kawartha

In 2003, I chose to run for the Burleigh Anstruther seat on North Kawartha Council.  At the time, our community was divided on many issues.  It was North vs. South, Cottagers vs. Locals, and Waterfront vs. Rural etc.  As a small business operator I decided that, instead of complaining about the challenges we were facing, I would get involved and put my energy into finding solutions.

With several years of hard work, cooperation and determination many of those divisions were bridged and North Kawartha experienced the joys and successes that come to all united communities.   During the 2014 election, despite numerous calls to run for Mayor, I chose to continue serving as a Ward Councillor.  I believed that my voice and my input would still be effective on Council and the growth, prosperity and positive outlook that North Kawartha was experiencing would continue.

Today it seems like North Kawartha is not in the contented place it was 4 years ago.  It feels like the old divisions have re-opened and the old wounds have not completely healed.  The negative ‘vibe’ is palpable.  People are stressed out, worried, unhappy and confused.  We are experiencing fundamental changes to the ‘tourism culture’ that drives our local economy. There seems to be greater incivility and less tolerance for community members with different opinions.  We have suffered the loss of businesses, services and institutions that we have relied on for generations.

I believe we are at a crossroads.  Change is the only constant and we can try to resist it, or we can work together to adapt to the changes and grow stronger as a result.  We have all the resources we need to build success.  I am not talking about our lakes or our forests or our public facilities.  I mean us… We, the people of North Kawartha.  The greatest asset our community has is its people.

Now, after 15 years as the Burleigh Anstruther Ward Councillor, I too am at a crossroads.  I am asking all North Kawarthans to elect me as your Mayor.  I believe that my experience, my proven dedication and my enthusiasm make me a great choice for Mayor.  I will uphold the principles of fairness and equality for all community members.  I believe that ALL voices need to be heard and respected.  I want to facilitate economic renewal for our businesses and local services.  I understand that the greatest part of ‘economic development’ is sustaining what we have.  I will promote a responsible, ‘common sense’ approach to planning and the implementation of the rules and regulations that govern us all.   The rules are necessary and important, and the ability to ask for relief from those rules is just as necessary and important.  A Mayor and Council must have a clear understanding and respect for the rules as we guide our community forward.

For over a decade, you have put your faith in me as a municipal councillor and I have worked hard for North Kawartha.  As Mayor, I believe that I can be an even greater champion of our community.  I know that being a leader does not always mean that you are the one standing out in front.  Often times a leader must stand in the back, making sure that no one is left behind.  No matter where I may stand please, know this: I stand with every one of you that loves our community.  So if you’re ready… I’m ready.  Let’s build North Kawartha together!
